riley dallaher: modern day marioriley lorenzo dallaher was born into a middle class family in a middle class town in the middle of nowhere. it seemed to be a common theme in his life simply because well, riley was just normal. born april 20, 1986 to conor dallaher and adriana del rio, he was the second and last child to join the dallaher tribe. his older sister, eva dallaher, was ten and incredibly resentful that she was no longer the only child garnering all of her parents' attention. she was supposed to be the star and subsequently decided that the spotlight would be on her, no matter what. over the years this didn't bother riley too much because he was far from being a type a personality. even as a kid, he was much more likely to be hanging back instead of charging into the fray of elementary school recess. he was the kid under the bleachers with his game boy, his best friend. not much would change over the years and the two siblings would continue to squabble well past their childhood years. their relationship defined sibling rivalry and riley constantly wondered why webster's dictionary didn't just put their picture straight onto the page.
due to his normal and very middle class life, riley didn't have much to say about his young life. when pressed for more of an answer, normalcy was the word riley would later go on to use to define his childhood. he played baseball, was in the christmas pageant, and generally got along well with his parents. it went hand in hand with his type b personality and his desire to want to do right for his parents. while his sister was out being the wild child, he was cleaning up her messes as best he could since he hadn't even hit double digits yet. at least that was until the accident, which riley refuses to discuss with pretty much anyone. he refers to it in passing but never directly explains anything about it. as far as riley was concerned, the only good thing about the accident was the subsequent move to california and a whole new world. he had his grandparents and more of an extended family than he thought was even possible thanks to the irish desire to reproduce quickly and frequently. with such a support net, how could anything go wrong? such a simple question... with one of the most terrible answers once he settled in to his new life. it wasn't necessarily a good world to fall into and riley quickly fell into the wrong crowd. this also became another time of his life that he doesn't really talk about. as far as he was concerned, it simply doesn't reflect the person he is today. barely making it out of high school, he left home on an extended road trip with the intention of finding himself. with the financial support of his father and sister, riley did exactly that by criss-crossing the globe for the hell of it and hell if it didn't help him out at least a little bit.
next stop? new york. it was a perfect place to find himself, right smack in the middle of millions of other people who were most likely trying to do the same thing. riley finally enrolled in school, any school that would take him at that point, at the age of nineteen and seemed to settle down. everything fell into place and slowly, he changed back into a normal human being instead of someone who felt the world was constantly against him. he wasn't as angry and he didn't hate everyone so that had to be some sort of positive, maybe even a point in his favor? normalcy returned and he finished up school with the intentions of taking over the world which simply meant acting a little more like an adult. the world seemed to have other plans and riley quickly made his was back to california... and by quickly, it meant stopping in every small town to try and find some place to find home although none of that happened. running wasn't necessarily the right choice but it made sense at the time. eventually, he realized that he wasn't even running but going home which was exactly where he belonged. the same extended family he pushed away were the people he started to embrace more than ever. putting his degree in history to use... kinda, he managed to land a job at the new children' museum which was exactly what he was looking for. the hours were great and hanging out with kids all day was one of his favorite parts of his duty.
conveniently enough, his sister and father live a couple of blocks in either direction which makes it easy enough for him to see his immediate family when he wants to. oddly enough, it took him more time to reconnect with the people who put up with him versus the people who just heard all of the horror stories. on the bright side with every month that goes by, he seems to connect more and more with the dallaher tribe. most of the time though, he ends up babysitting his niece and nephew (scarlet and noah, aged 7 and 5). at first he was completely awkward and didn't make for a babysitter at all but as the trio spent more and more time together, riley became more like a father figure to the children instead of just an uncle. with a sister who rivaled the housewives in atlanta, new york, orange county, and beverly hills... someone had to raise the kids. his darling sister simply decided that her kids were great arm candy in the day time but when there were galas and charity events, it was much better that they were elsewhere. that's where riley comes in and now, he acts more like the kids' father than their actual dad does. he swears they're the only reason he hangs around san diego and honestly. it's the truth. being able to hang out with the kids meant that he got to play video games and everything else that any self-respecting 'adult' shouldn't be wasting their time with.
of course hanging out with kids most of the time means that most of his interests are more suited towards a twelve year old boy. he'd rather stay in and play video games than go out and drink. you'd see him in line for the new mario game rather than a handle of vodka and that probably explains why he wasn't exactly popular with people his own age. they considered him strange and way too introverted for their tastes. that was okay with riley simply because he didn't like many people anyways. although he was still changing, his prickly disposition still reared its ugly head from time to time. he'd rather watch the history channel than most of the crap on mtv besides 16 and pregnant, one of his guilty pleasures. aside from that, he only seems to host an unhealthy hatred for twilight and bad books... heinous crimes that shouldn't even be mentioned in conversation. give him arrested development and a superhero movie over that nonsense any day. he also enjoys cooking and spends hours in the kitchens to prepare a good meal instead of just microwaving a hot pocket and calling it dinner. basically he's full of contradictions and trying to figure it all out is probably more of a headache than anyone would want to endure but despite it all, he manages to get by.
